Renovation Man's Infrared Thermography Studies Energy Loss Plays Hide-n-Seek

A proper and complete Energy Analysis is important to detect those hidden or less obvious energy losses.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin, of Kalamazoo, MI, invited us out because they have not been able to solve some nagging problems. They had previously invested in replacement windows for all of the operable windows. They wanted us to test the windows to make sure they weren't leaking, and to test the rest of the home for problems they were experiencing.
Results of Renovation Man's Infrared Thermography Analysis:

The windows had some leaks at the meeting rails. The metal spacer made the edge-of-glass temp lower.
Some of the air conditioning ducts were left open. These are an energy thieves during the winter. A quick twist to close and less draft is the result.
Door seals and lockset installation need adjusting. Some foam insulation, sealant and keeper adjusting is solution.
The above are examples of common energy loss in a home. Some minor adjustments will remedy much of the loss. Below are areas that are not so obvious.
The basement outside wall is un-insulated. Some joist pocket loss indicates exterior infiltration points. Sealing with foam insulation and caulk keeps out the air and ends the rodent problem.
The scan of a hallway wall indicates an open stud cavity to the attic. The air path was apparently intentionally installed to vent the basement bathroom. Stuffing the attic pocket above and properly venting the lower bath is the answer.
