How to Dramatically Improve Your Home's Curb Appeal

If you’re thinking of taking on an exterior renovation, you might find yourself in one of these camps:

Camp #1: You have zero ideas and no clue where to begin.

Camp #2: You’re completely and utterly overwhelmed with your options.

Camp #3: You’re on your 30th pin and still have no idea which color siding would look best for your home because (frankly) you love them all.

The truth is, there are so many ways you can take your home’s curb appeal from “blah” to “wow!” Whether it’s new siding, new windows, or introducing a few accents.

If you’re looking to improve your home’s curb appeal, here are some changes that will make a dramatic difference.

If you plan to reside your house, consider adding some accents to introduce a visually interesting dimension.

While residing your home will yield a dramatic transformation, accenting your new siding with brick, stone, cedar shake, or another element can do so much to help your home pop nicely. Why? Because it breaks up the eye and provides another visually interesting element to take in.

The reason this works is because it offers a variety of textures and complementary colors that draw your eye in, giving it that “wow factor.” When a home’s exterior is all one color, it tends to appear rather plain and uninteresting.

Here’s a great example from one of our previous customer projects. In the before photo (on the left) you can see that the front side of the home (while sporting different materials) was all the same color. In the after photo (on the right), we added new lighter colored siding which separated it nicely from the color of the brick and allowed it to become a noticeable accent.

Eliminating the shutters and replacing the windows with a darker finish helped give this home some additional character too!

Reimagine and spruce up the qualities your home already has.

If you’re looking to make some changes that are more budget-friendly, consider reimagining some of the qualities your home already has!

Here are some ideas:

  • Repaint your doors.

  • Add grids to your existing windows to give them a more updated “high end” look.

  • Repaint or replace your shutters.

  • Add flower boxes.

Here’s a great example from one of our previous customer projects. While this homeowner also added new siding, we also painted their front door and replaced their shutters. Notice how the the bold orange color really draws your eye in? Introducing these darker shutters also adds warmth and allows the windows to stand out from the siding as well.

Don’t forget the details.

While it’s easy to focus your attention on big ticket items like windows or siding, those are not the only things that can make a dramatic difference. Replacing light fixtures, adding accent trim, or replacing your old front door with one that has more character can be the finishing touch that truly ties everything else together.
